An Oak Lawn man was taken into custody early Saturday in Mokena after police found him carrying multiple improvised incendiary devices and a map marking an Orland Park mosque, according to the Will County state’s attorney’s office.

Authorities said officers first encountered 31-year-old Hamed Alsaidi at a closed Speedway gas station on Wolf Road around 2:52 a.m. Saturday. Alsaidi provided a false name and was later given a ride to an open gas station. Police subsequently detained him while he was walking in the traffic lanes near 191st Street and La Grange Road.

A search of Alsaidi’s backpack revealed eight Molotov cocktails, consisting of glass bottles filled with gasoline and rags—six in 12-ounce bottles and two in liter-sized bottles. Prosecutors also noted that Alsaidi carried a handwritten map with the words “you see the mosque,” seemingly indicating the Orland Park Prayer Center located on 104th Avenue.

Alsaidi was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and obstructing officers by providing false information, the state’s attorney’s office reported.

The Orland Park Police Department issued a statement acknowledging the arrest and the potential threat to the mosque. Since the incident, the department has maintained close coordination with the Mokena Police Department, federal law enforcement agencies, and mosque security personnel.

Following the arrest, Mokena police involved the Illinois State Fire Marshal, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF is continuing to lead the investigation.

Court records indicate that Alsaidi, who had previously been deemed an inadmissible alien, was considered a flight risk by prosecutors. He appeared in Will County Court on Sunday, where Judge Theodore Jarz ordered his release under electronic monitoring and home confinement conditions.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement database showed Alsaidi in custody at the Miami Correctional Center in Bunker Hill, Indiana.

The investigation into the potential targeting of the Orland Park Prayer Center remains active.
