Daveigh Chase, the former child actor known for voicing the lead character in Disney’s *Lilo & Stitch* and for her role as Samara in the 2002 horror film *The Ring*, has died at the age of 35. Her father, John David Schwallier, confirmed that Chase passed away due to complications from bacterial meningitis and a blood infection.

Chase died Tuesday in Los Angeles, reportedly near the hospital where she was receiving treatment. According to Schwallier, she had been homeless in the city alongside her boyfriend at the time of her illness. TMZ first reported her death on Wednesday.

Chase’s career began early, with her voice role as Lilo in the 2002 animated film earning her widespread recognition. She was just eight years old when she auditioned for the part. Later, a Hawaiian actress was cast to portray Lilo in the live-action remake of the film. In addition to her work with Disney, Chase gained critical acclaim for her portrayal of the menacing Samara Morgan in *The Ring*, which earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

Her voice work also includes the lead role in the 2001 animated film *Spirited Away*. Chase appeared in the cult classic *Donnie Darko* (2001) and the television series *Oliver Beene* (2003), as listed on entertainment databases.

Born in Las Vegas and raised in Albany, Oregon, Chase began performing at a young age, starting singing and dancing when she was three. In recent years, however, she faced personal struggles. Schwallier revealed in an interview that Chase had battled drug addiction since she was 13 and had become estranged from her divorced parents. He noted that he maintained contact with her boyfriend and visited Chase shortly before her death at the Los Angeles hospital.
