Denise Elizabeth Peterson, a veteran health care journalist and editorial leader, died on May 28, 2026, in Washington, D.C. She was 67. Peterson passed away with her sister by her side, closing a life marked by a distinguished career and deep community involvement.

Born on December 1, 1958, in Saigon, South Vietnam, Peterson was raised in Arlington, Virginia, and Pembroke Pines, Florida. Her parents, Frances V. Peterson and Richard C. Peterson, met and married in Washington, D.C., later living abroad before settling in Florida during the mid-1970s. Both parents have since passed away—her father in 1988 and her mother in 2018.

Peterson graduated from Swarthmore College and earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Over more than 35 years, she built a notable career in health care journalism, working primarily with F-D-C Reports, a publication that began as a family-run business and evolved into part of the global enterprise Citeline. Rising from reporter to editor-in-chief, she was recognized for her editorial acumen, steady leadership, and ability to guide the company through significant transitions.

Colleagues recall Peterson for her calm demeanor, sharp intellect, and a warm, generous nature. She was regarded as a mentor within the health care journalism community and praised for fostering a supportive and collegial work environment. Her passion extended beyond her professional life; she devoted time to cultural, legal, and community organizations including the Women’s National Book Association (Washington Chapter), the Maryland State Bar Association, the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, the National Press Club, and the U.S. Lighthouse Society.

Friends and acquaintances remember Peterson for her kindness, lively sense of humor, and personal attentiveness. She was known for her interest in friends’ families and personal lives, regularly hosting and supporting those close to her with gifts, tours, and social activities. Activities she enjoyed included cooking, reading, dancing, jazzercise, and water aerobics. She also supported the Girl Scouts vigorously, often leading sales of cookies and fall products.

A memorial service is scheduled for August 9 at Joseph Gawler’s Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., to honor her life and legacy. Friends and family are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peterson’s memory to Hope Connections for Cancer Support or the Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation, specifically the Center for Patient and Family Services – Cancer Center.
