Ernest Thomas Roop, a military veteran and longtime law enforcement officer, died on September 1, 2026, in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 86.

Born in Compton, California, to Joseph and Beatrice Roop, Ernest—known to family and friends as "Ernie"—dedicated much of his life to public service. He served as a Lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department before retiring, earning a reputation for integrity, strength, and humility throughout his career.

Beyond his professional commitments, Roop was remembered for his warm personality and sense of humor. He had a passion for fishing and classic cars, hobbies he enjoyed alongside his family.

Roop is survived by his wife of 52 years, Theresa "Teddi," his sister JoAnn, and his five children: Renee, Laura, Lisa, Terri, and Greg.

A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Cypress in California on September 24 at 11 a.m.
