John David Honsberger, a respected legal scholar, author, and mentor, died peacefully at the age of 103 on October 3, 2026, at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre in Toronto. Known for his extensive contributions to Canada’s legal community, Honsberger was surrounded by family and the comforts of home during his final moments.

Honsberger’s life was marked by service and dedication. He served in the Canadian Forces during World War II as part of the Anti-Tank Artillery. After the war, he pursued a distinguished legal career, practicing law until the age of 90. Renowned both nationally and internationally, he was recognized for his scholarly work and significant influence in the legal profession.

Throughout his career, Honsberger garnered numerous accolades, including being the first recipient of the Law Society of Upper Canada Medal and receiving the Award of Distinction from the Toronto Lawyers Association. In 2013, he was appointed to the Order of Ontario. The Toronto Lawyers Association established the annual TLA Honsberger Award in 2014 to honor his lasting impact on the profession, particularly his mentorship and support of young legal practitioners.

Honsberger’s contributions extended beyond practice; he served as Editor of the Law Society Gazette for over 30 years and was a prolific author, producing numerous books and publications on legal history. His extensive archival donations have provided valuable resources for future research and scholarship.

Raised in Thornhill with his first wife, Helen “Gummy” Honsberger, John was actively involved in his community, serving as Trustee and Chair of the York County Board of Education. He valued education and research, fostering a passion for reading and learning in his children, which also influenced his teaching career at Osgoode Hall Law School.

A lifelong lover of nature, Honsberger cherished the outdoors, a passion nurtured by his parents in his youth. He took great pleasure in gardening at his Thornhill home, and this legacy continues through the Honsberger Field. Known for his fondness for dogs, his favorite companion was Toby. In later years, he enjoyed quiet moments tending to the plants on his balcony.

Honsberger’s family was central to his life. He is survived by his children David (Nancy), Janet (Tom), and Joan; grandchildren Kaleb (Katy), Michael (Rachel), Jonathan; great-grandchildren Ayden, Nora, Ethan, Morgan; as well as extended family through the Honsberger-Ross blended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Marie Honsberger; both wives; his siblings; and grandson Connor.
