Joseph Patt, a lifelong resident of Chicago and a dedicated commercial typesetter, passed away peacefully on June 28 at the age of 92. Patt’s career spanned several decades during which he worked extensively using both hot type and cold type methods in the printing industry.
Born and raised in Chicago, Patt grew up in the St. Hyacinth Parish and attended Lane Technical High School. He married Shirley in 1956, and in 1964, the couple settled in the St. James Parish community. Throughout his life, Patt remained deeply connected to his city and its neighborhoods.
Outside his professional work, Patt was actively involved in local sports and community activities. He played and coached baseball for his union team, the Chicago Typos, and regularly participated in bowling and golf leagues. Known as a longtime season ticket holder for the Chicago Bears during their time at Wrigley Field, Patt witnessed the team’s 1963 NFL Championship victory. He also enjoyed sharing his love of baseball by taking his family to Chicago Cubs games each summer, a tradition that continued with his grandchildren.
Patt’s hobbies extended beyond sports. Starting in his teenage years, he developed a passion for building and flying model airplanes, a pastime he pursued well into his 80s. He was also known for his dedication to preserving family memories, consistently recording events on 8 mm film and later video, leaving behind a rich archive of family history from the 1950s through the 2010s.
He was regarded by neighbors and family alike as kind, humorous, and dependable, always willing to offer a helping hand. Patt is survived by his children Roberta, Joseph (Maria), and Kenny (Christy), eight grandchildren—M.J. (Mary), Megan, Mack (Alana), Jason (Katie), Alex, Jill (Mike), Kenny (Michelle), and Danny (Ann Marie)—and nine great-grandchildren, Joey, Eddie, Mike, Mabel, Olivia, Austin, Rosalie, Ruby, and Johnny. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, daughter Debbie Guerin (Skip), siblings Mercedes, Theresa, Mary Ann, and Jerome, as well as his parents.
Visitation was held on July 6 at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in Chicago, followed by funeral services on July 7, beginning with prayers at the funeral home and a Mass at St. Mary of the Woods Church. Patt was laid to rest at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles. The family requested that donations in his memory be made to the Anthony Rizzo Foundation.
