Karen Gail Robinson Utley, known for her steadfast Christian faith and deep commitment to family and community, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026. Born on October 13, 1938, in Little Rock, Arkansas, she spent her formative years in the nearby town of Cabot, where she was active in sports and student leadership, graduating as valedictorian of Cabot High School.
In July 1956, she married A. Ray Utley after eloping to Mississippi, beginning a marriage that lasted 70 years. The couple initially settled in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Gail worked at a local bank and later as an executive secretary for Arkansas Power and Light. Their family grew with the birth of their daughter Lisa in 1959 and their son Lee in 1963. As Ray’s coaching career advanced, the family relocated across Texas, living in Dallas, Friendswood, and ultimately Cypress, where they retired to be near their children and grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Gail Utley demonstrated a strong spirit and a wide range of interests. An avid competitor, she enjoyed golf and tennis, often participating in local tournaments alongside her husband. Her hobbies also included knitting, sewing, cooking, baking, reading, and completing crossword puzzles in ink. A passionate genealogist, she dedicated significant time to researching her family history, with ties tracing back to early Virginia and Williamsburg. These efforts involved extensive visits to libraries and cemeteries, supported by Ray, who often shielded her from inclement weather during these trips. Gail’s genealogical work extended to helping others uncover their roots, reflecting her commitment to heritage preservation.
She was actively involved in numerous lineage societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, United States Daughters of 1812, National Society Colonial Dames 17th Century, National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, the Jamestown Society, and the National Society Magna Charta Dames. Within these organizations, she held several leadership positions and contributed notably as a volunteer genealogist and supporter of the Daughters of 1812 JROTC medal scholarship program.
Gail Utley is survived by her husband, A. Ray Utley; their daughter, Lisa Harvey; their son, Lee Utley, and his wife Kristin; six grandsons and their spouses or partners; and five great-grandchildren. Known for her sharp intellect, competitive nature, and generous spirit, she was widely cherished by family and friends.
A graveside service will take place on July 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cabot, Arkansas. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Gail’s memory to the Roaring Lambs organization.
