The low-budget horror film *Obsession*, directed by first-time filmmaker Curry Barker, has emerged as one of the most profitable movies in history, generating over US$400 million ($684 million) in global revenues. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and saw a wider release in May, has gained momentum primarily through word-of-mouth, particularly among Generation Z audiences with an appetite for horror.
At just 26 years old, Barker’s transition from YouTube creator to Hollywood director has been swift. The film was made on a modest budget estimated between US$750,000 and US$1 million. According to Bruce Nash, founder of the industry data website The Numbers, *Obsession* is poised to become the most financially successful film relative to its production budget ever, surpassing the success ratio of *The Blair Witch Project* (1999), which earned around US$250 million from a budget of US$600,000.
While larger Hollywood blockbusters such as the *Avatar* series, *Frozen*, and *Titanic* have earned greater total revenue, their production budgets were vastly higher, often hundreds of times more than Barker’s film. Barker’s accomplishment also eclipses the commercial performance of another recent horror success, *Backrooms*, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, which earned approximately US$360 million on a US$10 million budget.
Both *Obsession* and *Backrooms* rank among the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2026, signaling a renewed interest in horror films among young viewers and highlighting a trend toward social media content creators crossing into mainstream cinema. Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan remarked that these developments are encouraging signs for the future of the film industry.
Barker’s journey began in Mobile, Alabama, before relocating to Los Angeles after high school to pursue film studies and acting. His early years in Hollywood included working various service jobs and taking small roles—including a minor part in the television series *It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia*—while collaborating with creative partner Cooper Tomlinson to produce online horror shorts and comedy sketches on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
*Obsession*’s storyline centers on a young man who uses a mystical charm called the “One Wish Willow” to make his long-time friend and romantic interest fall in love with him. The film explores themes of toxic relationships, consent, and the darker elements of dating culture, delivering a chilling narrative that resonates with genre enthusiasts.
Focus Features, a unit of Universal Pictures, acquired distribution rights to *Obsession* for US$15 million at the Toronto festival, turning the movie into a significant commercial success. Barker now faces decisions about his career trajectory with several projects underway, including a second feature, *Anything But Ghosts*, in which he appears as an actor alongside Tomlinson, and a new remake of the 1974 slasher classic *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre*.
“I have a lot to weigh and that’s where the stress really comes from. I don’t know what to do next,” Barker told industry media, reflecting on the rapid rise in his career.
