Kate O’Connor delivered a commanding performance in the final events of the heptathlon, securing her first major senior championship title with a total of 6,569 points. The competition took place ahead of the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham, scheduled to begin in just under two weeks.

O’Connor, who expressed frustration over her initial day’s performance, improved steadily through the concluding events. She cleared 1.82 meters in the high jump, then recorded a season-best throw of 52.85 meters in the javelin. She capped off her victory by winning the final 800-meter race with ease, ensuring a substantial winning margin of 291 points over England’s Jade O’Dowda.

O’Dowda, 26, from Sheffield, who secured bronze at the Birmingham Games in 2022, entered the last event needing to finish 18 seconds ahead of O’Connor to claim the title. Despite recording a season-best time in the 800 meters, she crossed the finish line 2.28 seconds behind, settling for the silver medal.

Meanwhile, London’s Georgia Hunter Bell moved closer to medal contention after advancing safely through the women’s 800-meter semi-finals. Hunter Bell secured victory in her semi-final heat with a time of 1:59.88, delivering a composed and measured effort. Reflecting on her race strategy, she noted her preference for one competitor to set a fast pace, which allowed her to conserve energy for the finish.

With her strong finish in the heptathlon and the European Championships imminent in Birmingham, O’Connor looks poised to continue her upward trajectory in championship athletics.
