At 89, Werner Kalecinski has emerged as a popular figure on the German social media platform TikTok, gaining nearly 200,000 followers with his humorous content that bridges generational gaps. Adopting the persona of "Opa Werner" (Grandpa Werner), Kalecinski has carved out a niche by engaging with trends popular among young people, often reviewing coffee beverages and reacting with candid, humorous critiques.
Kalecinski’s rise to social media fame began in 2025 when he auditioned for a series aimed at featuring older influencers, sometimes referred to as "grandfluencers." The audition process, led by social media veteran Amin Anbousi, involved more than 150 applicants, but Kalecinski stood out due to his idiosyncratic use of Gen Z slang in his written application and his ability to engage naturally in video calls. The initiative was encouraged by Heike Hepperle, a retired nurse and friend of Kalecinski, who herself has gained recognition as a pensioner influencer.
The octogenarian’s digital debut came during a period of personal hardship. Shortly before his wife’s death, Kalecinski sought to reclaim a sense of purpose after years devoted to caregiving. His social media content reflects a blend of lightheartedness and resilience, qualities he has drawn upon throughout a life marked by significant challenges.
Born in Berlin to a family originally from what is now Poland, Kalecinski experienced the turmoil of World War II firsthand. As a child, he was evacuated from the city amid the Allied bombing campaign and later escaped East Germany at 18 to evade conscription into the police force. His adulthood comprised numerous career shifts—ranging from metal scavenging and electrical work to sales in various industries—and later, roles in distribution and door-to-door frozen food sales. He continues to lead an active life, engaging in physical exercise and part-time day trading alongside his social media activities.
Kalecinski has also faced family tragedies, including the 2013 death of his son. Since then, he has lived in a multigenerational household with his granddaughter and her children, an arrangement he credits with providing mutual support uncommon in Germany.
Observers note that Kalecinski’s appeal stems from his authenticity and willingness to embrace the humor and slang of younger generations while maintaining his candid, often curmudgeonly charm. Social media analysts suggest that this blend of honesty and entertainment has attracted sponsorships and collaborations with brands, despite—or perhaps because of—his often critical takes on products.
Throughout the past year, Kalecinski has expanded his presence beyond TikTok, winning an award for a supermarket campaign, participating in festivals, and even venturing into music collaborations. Fans appreciate his unique voice in a digital landscape dominated by polished influencers, seeing in him a reminder that older adults continue to live vibrant, evolving lives.
“Younger people often try to adapt to older people when they’re spending time with them, but in his case, he tries to understand the younger generation,” said 19-year-old follower Szymon Zurawski. Similarly, 27-year-old Evelyn Wilczek described Kalecinski’s videos as a refreshing contrast to mainstream social media, encouraging viewers to embrace life with energy regardless of age.
