Rising sea temperatures off the coast of southern England have contributed to a significant increase in octopus populations, creating new opportunities — and challenges — for the local fishing industry. English octopus catches surged by more than 7,000 percent in 2025, with Brixham fish market, a major hub for seafood trade, recently experiencing record sales of over 100 tonnes of octopus in a single day. This boom has contributed to an overall rise in the market’s value, which reached £77 million last year, up £15 million from the previous year.
Scientists and industry experts attribute the sudden abundance of octopuses to warming waters in the region, which have altered marine ecosystems and attracted these cephalopods to English coastal waters. Anecdotal reports also suggest that the octopuses being caught are larger than those recorded in past decades. Though similar "octopus blooms" have occurred before, the current scale is unprecedented.
The rise in octopus numbers, however, has had mixed effects. While it has boosted octopus catches, some native species such as crabs and lobsters have suffered population declines, in part due to predation by the expanding cephalopod population. Fishermen targeting these traditional crustaceans report diminished yields, highlighting the shifting balance within local marine life.
Despite the increase in supply, much of the catch—estimated at 90 percent—is exported, primarily to Spain and Italy, where octopus is a staple ingredient in various traditional dishes. Domestic consumption of octopus in England remains relatively low, with anecdotal evidence indicating that buyers tend to be from Spanish, Portuguese, or East Asian communities. Retailers report that octopus is rarely purchased by native English customers for home preparation.
Several factors contribute to this reluctance. Octopus is considered challenging to prepare properly, requiring expert cleaning and extended cooking to avoid a tough, rubbery texture. While some fishmongers offer cleaning services, the preparation process can be daunting for untrained cooks. Additionally, some consumers express ethical reservations, influenced by the perception of octopuses as highly intelligent creatures. Known for their advanced problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and hunting abilities, octopuses stand out among invertebrates, leading to debates about the morality of consuming them.
Nonetheless, experts argue that while octopuses display impressive cognitive traits compared to other sea creatures, this should not deter people from including them in their diets. They note that many other intelligent animals are widely consumed without ethical concern. The recent increase in octopus availability presents an opportunity to diversify British seafood cuisine, echoing Mediterranean and East Asian culinary traditions where octopus is highly prized.
As England’s marine environment continues to evolve with climate change, the seafood industry and consumers alike face the challenge of adapting to new species abundance and shifting ecological dynamics. The burgeoning octopus population may well become an emblem of these ongoing transformations.
