The Adelaide Thunderbirds’ netball squad has found an unexpected pairing in international recruits Elmere van der Berg and Kate Heffernan, whose on-court partnership and off-court friendship have become integral to the team’s dynamics this season. South African shooter van der Berg and New Zealand midcourter Heffernan, both new additions for the current Super Netball season, have been nicknamed the "van der Berg twins" by coach Tania Obst, reflecting their close bond.
The two players, who replaced retiring captain Hannah Petty and experienced goaler Romelda Aiken-George, have quickly connected both personally and professionally. Their friendship began unexpectedly after an international match in Invercargill, where they agreed to become housemates. Obst noted the significance of this companionship, saying the closeness between them exceeded her initial expectations and has positively influenced the team atmosphere.
Van der Berg described the mutual support they provide each other in adapting to a new league and environment. “Where she went or where I went, we both went together. And that was nice to have that,” she said, highlighting the comfort in sharing the adjustment process. Heffernan, who is a twin herself and soon to compete alongside her sister Georgia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, emphasized how much having van der Berg’s support eased her transition away from her familiar circle. “I was a little bit unsure of and nervous about” being away from home, Heffernan said, but having a teammate and housemate to rely on made the experience less daunting.
On the court, their synergy has been equally evident. Heffernan’s precision feeding complements van der Berg’s shooting, making them a formidable combination for the Thunderbirds. Both players were already regarded as top netball talents internationally prior to joining the team, and their seamless integration has raised the squad’s competitiveness this season. Van der Berg praised Heffernan’s intelligence and skill in feeding the circle, noting that their understanding grew naturally from their initial connection.
As the Thunderbirds continue through the season, the partnership between van der Berg and Heffernan illustrates how personal relationships can enhance professional performance, strengthening the team’s cohesion and prospects in the league.
