Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, is experiencing an unprecedented number of pregnancies among its labor and delivery staff. Currently, 17 nurses in the hospital’s childbirth unit are expecting babies, surpassing the previous record of 11 pregnant nurses at once, set in 2019.

The nurses’ due dates range from June through December, with some anticipating their first child. Among them is Rileigh Batten, who is approximately 31 weeks pregnant. Batten, who has worked with colleague Maddie for five years, shared that Maddie, also expecting, plans to be present when she delivers her baby. The two nurses are close friends, highlighting a unique bond formed amid this unusual staffing situation.

Amberly Saner, the nurse manager of the labor and delivery unit, expressed surprise at the high number of pregnancies but indicated that the department is prepared to handle the temporary absences. With nearly 200 nurses and support staff employed at the hospital, she said the impact on operations is expected to be manageable despite the maternity leaves.

The convergence of so many pregnancies among nurses in one department is rare and has drawn attention both within and outside the hospital. While the timing presents a logistical challenge, Miami Valley Hospital continues to provide care without disruption, relying on its larger team to cover shifts as nurses begin their maternity leaves over the coming months.
