Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin will be sidelined indefinitely after sustaining an injury to his throwing arm in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Indiana, head coach Ryan Day announced Tuesday night. Day did not provide a specific timeline for Sayin’s return and indicated it is possible the junior may miss the remainder of the season.
“We are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season and then also him not being available for the postseason,” Day said. “So based on that, if he’s not able to return this fall, we’re putting a plan together for that as well.”
The Buckeyes, ranked third in the nation with a 6-1 overall record and undefeated 4-0 in Big Ten play, have a scheduled bye week following their 19-15 victory over No. 6 Indiana. This break provides the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, time to assess their options under center. Freshman Luke Fahey and sophomore Tavien St. Clair are being evaluated as potential starters ahead of Ohio State’s upcoming primetime matchup against No. 16 Southern California on October 31.
In addition to Sayin’s absence, Ohio State will be without running back Ja’Kobi Jackson, who reportedly underwent foot surgery. Jackson, who has accumulated 354 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season while averaging six yards per carry, is expected to miss several weeks but there remains optimism about his ability to return before the season concludes.
