Shohei Ohtani became the first Japanese player in Major League Baseball history to hit 300 home runs during Tuesday’s game, but the Los Angeles Dodgers fell 4-3 to the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani’s milestone came with a leadoff home run, marking his 300th career round-tripper and further establishing his unique combination of power and speed—he is also the first player to record more than 300 homers and 100 stolen bases within his first nine MLB seasons.
The Dodgers’ manager, Dave Roberts, remains hopeful that two of his pitchers, left-handed starter Justin Wrobleski and reliever Tanner Scott, will be added as replacements to the National League All-Star roster. Roberts cited Wrobleski’s strong performance, including a 2.69 ERA and 10 wins, as well as his ability to consistently pitch six or more innings, as reasons the rookie deserves a spot. Scott, despite a recent blown save, holds a 2.70 ERA with 12 saves and is seen by Roberts as one of the league’s top relievers.
Tuesday saw additional changes to the All-Star pitching roster, as MLB named Braxton Ashcraft (Pittsburgh), Jesús Luzardo (Philadelphia), and Riley O’Brien (St. Louis) as replacements for the initially selected Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh), Jacob Misiorowski (Milwaukee), and Max Meyer (Miami), who withdrew. Rotation schedules will continue to affect availability, with Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto likely to miss the All-Star Game due to a scheduled start Saturday.
In Tuesday’s game, Wrobleski delivered six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out nine. His nickname, “The Shark,” coined by Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez, was celebrated at Dodger Stadium with the organist playing the "Jaws" theme during his strikeouts, and teammates playfully acknowledging the moniker. Wrobleski’s performance added to his bid for an All-Star nod.
The Dodgers briefly took a two-run lead but ultimately relinquished it in the eighth inning due to defensive miscues by Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeman, including a failure to cover third base on a sacrifice bunt. In the ninth, Evan Phillips, making his first major league appearance since Tommy John surgery last summer, pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. However, the offense was unable to rally against the Rockies’ bullpen, with the top of the lineup going down in order despite two runners on base.
Roberts also indicated that Ohtani is expected to pitch Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, continuing his role as a two-way player for the Dodgers.
