Oklahoma secured its first national baseball championship since 1994 with a decisive 13-2 victory over North Carolina in the winner-take-all Game 3 of the College World Series finals on Monday night in Omaha. The Sooners capitalized on uncharacteristic pitching difficulties by the Tar Heels and received another key relief appearance from LJ Mercurius, who helped close out the dominant performance.
The Sooners, who entered the NCAA tournament after a challenging stretch—losing seven of their last nine games and finishing 11th in the Southeastern Conference regular season—completed an unexpected run to capture the title. With this victory, Oklahoma secured the SEC’s seventh consecutive national championship.
North Carolina, which entered the series with a 54-14-1 record, was making its third runner-up appearance since 2006 and extended a postseason drought with now 13 College World Series appearances without a national title. The Tar Heels struggled on the mound in the final game, unable to contain Oklahoma’s offense after limiting them to just four singles in their 6-2 win in Game 2.
The lopsided final score marked North Carolina’s most substantial defeat of the season. Oklahoma rebounded strongly from the Game 2 loss to deliver an offensive onslaught that ultimately ended their long championship drought and added a third College World Series title to the program’s history.
