Vijay Singh secured a victory at the SAS Championship on Sunday, becoming the second-oldest winner on the PGA Tour Champions at 63 years old. The Fijian golfer closed with a three-under 69 to finish two shots ahead of runner-up Ernie Els at the tournament held in Cary, North Carolina.
Singh made a decisive move with four birdies over a six-hole stretch near the turn, positioning himself atop a tightly contested leaderboard. He then maintained steady play with six consecutive pars to hold off his competitors. His win adds to his six titles on the PGA Tour Champions, marking his first victory in more than three years. Prior to this win, Singh had not recorded a top-10 finish on the senior circuit throughout the year.
Bernhard Langer remains the oldest player to win on the 50-and-over tour, having claimed a title at age 67. The German golfer has multiple Championships Tour victories after turning 64, underscoring the competitiveness of senior players at advanced ages.
Reflecting on the achievement, Singh noted the challenges he faced, particularly with his back in cold conditions and less-than-ideal iron shots, but expressed satisfaction in getting the job done. “It’s been a tough year, all year, and then I didn’t know how I was going to play this morning. My back doesn’t do very well in cold. I didn’t hit my irons as good as I wanted to, but I got the job done,” he said.
Ernie Els closed with a 69, finishing two strokes behind Singh, while Tim O’Neal was briefly in contention. O’Neal held a one-shot lead before encountering trouble on the par-five 17th hole, where a failed attempt to play out of a fairway bunker resulted in his ball rolling into a creek. He finished with a double bogey-bogey sequence, falling out of contention.
Matthew Goggin was the only player to advance into the top 72 in the standings qualifying for the Charles Schwab Cup postseason, which is scheduled to begin next week in St. Louis.
