A pub sign that vanished from a Sheffield public house more than two decades ago has been returned to its original location. The Ward’s brewery sign for The Hallamshire House disappeared in the 1990s and was recently rediscovered across the Atlantic in Brooklyn, New York.

The sign came to light when two former patrons, Peter Chamley and his wife, found it hanging on the wall of a neighbor’s apartment during their time living in Brooklyn. Upon returning to the United Kingdom, the couple arranged for the sign to be sent back to Sheffield.

Doug Simpson, general manager of The Hallamshire House, confirmed that he was contacted by email to inquire if the pub wanted the sign returned. He described the event as “really special” and noted that the sign now occupies a place of pride on the back lounge wall of the establishment.

The return of the sign after 25 years has been welcomed by staff and patrons alike, restoring a piece of the pub’s history and connecting present visitors with its legacy.
