Musician and comedian Oliver Tree was among six people killed Sunday in a midair collision between two helicopters over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 32-year-old singer-songwriter was a passenger in one of the helicopters when it collided with another aircraft, resulting in both crashing to the ground. The accident occurred over Avenida das Americas, where one of the helicopters crashed into an electric car dealership, igniting a fire that engulfed at least 20 vehicles.

Local authorities confirmed that all six occupants aboard the two helicopters perished. In addition to Tree, the victims included Argentinian YouTuber Gaspar Prim—known as “Gaspi” to his 7.5 million social media followers—passengers Lucas Vignale and Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac. Brazilian officials reported that the bodies had been transported to the Afrânio Peixoto Forensic Medical Institute for identification.

According to reports, the helicopter carrying Tree and four other passengers had departed from Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro’s city center and was headed to Guaratiba Heliport to the west. The second helicopter, operated by a solo pilot, departed from Jacarepaguá Airport and was en route to Angra dos Reis, located along the state’s Green Coast. The circumstances that led to the collision are currently under investigation by Brazilian authorities.

Oliver Tree, whose full name was Oliver Tree Nickell, was born on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California. He first gained attention in the music industry as a teenager, collaborating with artists such as Skrillex and Zeds Dead. After releasing an independent album titled “Splitting Branches” in 2013, he took a hiatus to study music technology before returning to the scene. His breakthrough came with his 2020 studio album “Ugly Is Beautiful,” which included the platinum-certified single “Life Goes On.” More recently, he had released the album “Love You Madly Hate You Badly” in April and was on a world tour promoting the record, with upcoming dates scheduled in Lisbon and several U.S. cities, including a planned August 5 performance in New York City.

Known for blending alternative pop, electronic music, and comedy, Tree was recognized for his distinctive bowl-cut hairstyle and retro 1980s-inspired fashion. He amassed a substantial following on social media platforms, including nearly 10 million combined followers on YouTube and Instagram.

The investigation into the helicopter crash is ongoing, as officials work to determine the precise cause of the collision.
