Gurbax Singh Grewal, an Olympic bronze medallist and former Indian field hockey player, passed away on Friday at the age of 84 following a heart attack in Zirakpur, near Chandigarh. Grewal was part of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City.

Notably, he competed alongside his brother, Balbir Singh Grewal, at the same Olympic Games—a rare occurrence of siblings representing India together in the sport at that level. Beyond his playing career, Gurbax Singh Grewal served as a senior sports officer for Western Railways. After retiring from active service, he continued contributing to the development of hockey through his administrative roles, including his tenure as secretary of the Mumbai Hockey Association.

Hockey India, the governing body for the sport in the country, announced Grewal’s death in a statement released on Saturday, expressing condolences and mourning the loss of the distinguished sportsman.
