Jack Beaumont, a British Olympic rower and Tokyo silver medalist, intervened to prevent a speedboat operator from deliberately ramming rowing sculls on the River Thames near Maidenhead on Sunday morning. The incident involved the operator of an 18-foot cruiser, reportedly named the Mayfair Lady, who was seen charging at single rowing boats in a series of aggressive maneuvers.

Beaumont, 32, was rowing with members of Maidenhead Rowing Club when the boat owner began targeting sculls, prompting Beaumont to question his actions. According to witnesses, the man responded with profanities and accelerated toward Beaumont’s boat before reversing in an apparent attempt to ram it. Footage obtained shows the boat operator verbally abusing Beaumont, who then skillfully evaded the collision and steered the speedboat away from other rowers downstream.

One eyewitness described the situation as highly dangerous, stating that the speedboat endangered rowers and nearly caused one to fall into the water. The rower added that Beaumont’s intervention may have prevented a life-threatening or fatal incident. The boat owner is believed to occasionally live on his vessel and has previously had altercations with members of Maidenhead Rowing Club.

Thames Valley Police arrested a 67-year-old Windsor man in connection with the incident. He faces several charges including threats to kill, criminal damage, common assault, a Section 4 Public Order Act offence, and operating a watercraft in a manner that endangered individuals or structures. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Maidenhead Rowing Club, which has a history dating back to 1876 and is located in an area known as "Hollywood on Thames," expressed serious concerns about the incident. The club emphasized that the safety of all water users is paramount and condemned the boat operator’s conduct as unacceptable.

Beaumont is the son of Peter Beaumont, an Olympic rower who narrowly missed a medal by finishing fourth in the men's eight at the 1988 Seoul Games. The Maidenhead riverside area is popular among athletes and celebrities, including Olympic swimmer Tom Dean, underscoring the prominence of the local rowing community.
