Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has announced a comprehensive ban on the fishing, collection, possession, and trade of abalone until November 1, 2027. The new regulation, outlined in Ministerial Decision No. 264/2026, was issued by Minister Dr. Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi on October 20, 2026, and takes effect immediately after its publication in the Official Gazette.

The decision prohibits all activities involving abalone, including fishing, handling, transportation, buying, selling, and exporting during the ban period. Additionally, possession of any abalone harvesting equipment on fishing vessels operating near Oman’s coastal areas and fishing grounds is forbidden throughout the duration of the ban.

An exception to the ban permits the trade and export of abalone legally harvested prior to the enforcement of the decision, subject to the acquisition of the necessary permits from relevant authorities.

The measure aims to protect and conserve abalone stocks along Oman’s coastline, aligning with the government’s efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and safeguard marine resources.
