The Joint Oman-Iran Committee on the Strait of Hormuz convened its inaugural meeting in Muscat on Monday to discuss the future management of the strategically vital waterway. The Omani delegation was led by Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al Hinai, Ambassador-at-Large at the Omani Foreign Ministry, while the Iranian delegation was headed by Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on enhancing coordination regarding issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of aligning their efforts with the mutual interests and sovereignty of Oman and Iran. The committee reaffirmed their commitment to adhering to international law as a guiding framework for cooperation.
Discussions included exploring frameworks for collaboration on navigation safety and maritime services, building upon their roles as the two littoral states responsible for the strait’s security and management. The talks aimed to strengthen cooperation in line with existing bilateral agreements and international understandings that govern the use and administration of the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and the meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Oman and Iran to maintain stability and security in the region. The establishment of this joint committee marks a formal step toward more structured dialogue and collaboration between the two neighboring countries on maritime and security matters concerning the strait.
