Oman has been ranked the second safest country worldwide in the 2026 safety index compiled by US News & World Report, placing just behind Singapore. The annual ranking evaluates nations based on multiple criteria, including crime rates, the effectiveness of law enforcement, political stability, emergency preparedness, infrastructure resilience, and public perceptions of safety.

Joining Oman among the top-ranked countries are Japan, Qatar, New Zealand, and Switzerland, among others. The assessment highlights the intrinsic link between security and sustainable development, emphasizing safety as a foundational element supporting economic growth, investment, and social well-being in the Sultanate.

Oman’s elevated position in the index is attributed to its long-term strategic planning, robust institutions, and the steady enhancement of its security framework. Recently, the country has increased investments in modern policing techniques, digital security infrastructure, emergency response capabilities, and smart technologies, all of which have strengthened the ability of national agencies to prevent crime, improve public services, and address emerging security challenges effectively.

An official representative indicated that maintaining high public safety standards is a collective responsibility shared between government institutions and society at large. The official underscored the importance of public awareness, adherence to the rule of law, and constructive collaboration between community members and authorities in fostering a secure environment.

Residents of Oman also attest to the country’s secure atmosphere in their daily lives. Omar Khaled, an Egyptian expatriate who has lived in Oman for over eight years, cited the genuine sense of safety as a key factor in making Oman his permanent home. “My family and I can go about our daily lives with complete peace of mind,” he said.

Rajesh Kumar, an Indian expatriate, highlighted the culture of respect and mutual trust that reinforces social stability in Oman. He described the country as offering an exceptional quality of life, with security being a central strength.

International analyses consistently show that countries recognized for high safety rankings typically benefit from effective governance, transparent legal frameworks, quality education, and strong social cohesion. For Oman, this latest accolade not only serves as global validation but also reinforces the ongoing commitment to security and stability as integral components of the nation's broader development goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
