Muscat, June 13 — The Sultanate of Oman is advancing its freelance ecosystem by leveraging digital platforms to support national talent and contribute to economic diversification, according to recent discussions at a symposium organized by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI).

The event, titled “Reality of Freelance Work in the Sultanate of Oman,” took place under the auspices of OCCI’s Labour Market Committee and highlighted the growing role of freelance work within the country’s evolving labour market. Speakers emphasized the need to anticipate ongoing changes in work models and to create an enabling environment that maximizes the potential benefits of freelancing for the national economy.

Saleh bin Juma al Balushi, Assistant Director General for Board Affairs at OCCI, described freelance work as a promising economic pillar that enhances labour market flexibility, empowers local talent, and supports Oman’s broader economic diversification efforts. He noted that the rapid expansion of modern work arrangements demands supportive policies and infrastructure to keep pace with global trends and boost the sector’s contribution to economic growth.

Nasser bin Juma al Harthy, Senior Media and Corporate Communications Specialist at OCCI, highlighted the significant impact of freelancing platforms in strengthening the digital economy in Oman. He pointed out that these platforms offer flexible work opportunities amid shifting global labour market dynamics and an increasing focus on digital and specialized skills.

According to al Harthy, freelancing platforms have become integral to contemporary business operations worldwide, offering benefits such as cost reduction, productivity gains, and faster project completion for both freelancers and clients. He underscored the importance of establishing a comprehensive national platform for freelance work in Oman, which would facilitate legal and compliant contracts between service providers and clients in accordance with Omani law.

These developments reflect Oman’s commitment to nurturing an adaptable and diversified economic environment, recognizing freelance work as a key contributor to the future workforce and economic landscape driven by digital innovation.
