Oman’s national under-20 football team began their AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over hosts Qatar at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha on Monday. After falling behind in the first half, Oman rallied in the second period with goals from Ali al Alawi and Ahmed al Fahdi to secure three points in their Group E opener.

Qatar took the lead in the 26th minute when Muhannad Jameel capitalized on a pass from Adam Riyad to score inside the penalty area. Despite Oman’s early offensive efforts, including a header that required a save from Qatar’s goalkeeper Awad Ashraf, the home side maintained their advantage until half-time.

The second half saw Oman increase their pressure on Qatar’s defense. Several attempts from Mohammed al Sameen, Abdullah al Saadi, and al Fahdi challenged Awad Ashraf, who made multiple saves to keep the hosts in front initially. Oman’s persistence paid off in the 64th minute when a corner kick was partially cleared, allowing Ali al Alawi to net a powerful left-footed shot to level the score.

Nine minutes later, Oman took the lead. Al Waleed al Buraidi delivered a precise ball into the penalty area that Ahmed al Fahdi converted, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Oman maintained control for the remainder of the match, ensuring a valuable win on the road.

The victory places Oman second in Group E on three points, behind Saudi Arabia on goal difference. Saudi Arabia also secured a 2-0 win over Hong Kong, China in their opening group match. Qatar and Hong Kong, China have yet to earn points.

Oman will face Saudi Arabia on Thursday in a key group encounter at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. Oman time. Both teams enter the match level on points. Oman’s final group game is set for Sunday, September 6, against Hong Kong, China.

Under the tournament format, the eight group winners and the seven best runners-up will qualify for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Finals, joining the host nation China. Oman’s strong start to the qualifiers enhances their prospects of advancing to the main event.
