Oman's national youth handball team faced a 33-23 loss against Bahrain on Monday in the 19th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship held in Zhuzhou, China. This defeat has diminished their chances of advancing further in the tournament, which also serves as the Asian qualification event for the IHF Men’s Youth World Championship.

The Oman squad started the match strongly, with Maamoon al Hassani scoring the opening goal in a closely contested first half against their Gulf rival. Both teams traded goals evenly as Oman demonstrated disciplined defense and rapid transitions. However, Bahrain managed to capitalize on late opportunities to lead 15-13 at halftime.

In the second half, Bahrain gained momentum as the physical toll of the tournament affected the Omani players. They increased their intensity, forced turnovers, and executed effective fast breaks, gradually extending their lead to secure a 10-goal victory. Despite Oman’s efforts to mount a comeback, Bahrain maintained control throughout the latter stages of the match.

Following the defeat, Oman’s coaching staff shifted their focus to the team’s final group stage game against Chinese Taipei set for Wednesday. The players engaged in light recovery exercises and tactical training aimed at regaining fitness and refining both defensive and offensive strategies.

Team administrator Ahmed bin Rashid al Jassasi acknowledged the players’ commitment throughout the competition despite the setback. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming match and assured that all available technical and administrative resources would be mobilized in preparation. Al Jassasi also disclosed that the head of delegation, Amir al Dughaishi, has promised financial incentives to the team should they win their final fixture.

Assistant coach Yahya bin Khamis al Maashani cited fatigue as a key factor in the second-half decline. “The first half reflected the players’ concentration and commitment. In the second half, fatigue became evident, mistakes increased and Bahrain took advantage. Now our full focus is on Chinese Taipei,” he stated.

Players expressed optimism ahead of the final match. Al Khattab al Hassani noted the team had already moved past the Bahrain defeat, while Hamza al Hassani highlighted the valuable experience gained from the tournament. Umair al Balushi commended the support from coaching and administrative staff, and Waleed al Balushi affirmed that team morale remains high as they aim to conclude their campaign on a positive note.
