An incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday led to a dramatic emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot, an Omani national, stabbed the Indian pilot, prompting the plane to dive sharply before passengers and crew regained control. The flight, carrying 174 people—mostly Israeli citizens—descended approximately 14,000 feet in under a minute before making an emergency landing at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia.
The Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, sustained serious injuries from the stabbing, including wounds to the head and a severely injured arm, but was able to unlock the cockpit door despite his condition. This allowed passengers and a reserve flight crew, who were aboard the aircraft, to confront and restrain the co-pilot using improvised means such as headphone cables and yellow straps. The injured captain was later reported to be in stable condition and recovering after treatment in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the event as a "serious security incident," stating that the attacker had undergone what he characterized as "Islamist indoctrination" and appeared to be suicidal, possibly intending to crash the plane. Netanyahu also noted that the co-pilot was able to operate the flight despite Israel’s stringent aviation security measures, which typically bar pilots from countries without diplomatic relations with Israel—such as Oman—from flying into Israeli airspace. However, Netanyahu also acknowledged it was too early to establish any connection to Iran or confirm a definitive motive.
The co-pilot’s motive remains unclear, with investigators considering multiple possibilities, including terrorism and mental health issues. Officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Oman, and the United States are cooperating in the investigation. The UAE government has emphasized that UAE law applies to crimes on board their registered aircraft and has launched its own inquiry, seeking to determine if the incident was linked to terrorism or prior planning.
Israeli defense officials have described the event as an attempted terrorist attack, with statements indicating that the co-pilot had expressed jihadist views online, including references to killing Jews. A colleague of the suspect reportedly told Israeli media that the co-pilot exhibited unusual religious behavior, such as frequent prayers and avoiding physical contact with women. However, some public voices have raised skepticism about the rapid conclusion of the investigation, calling for caution against premature speculation.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft experienced a severe nose-dive and erratic movements before landing. Reports indicate that Saudi and Jordanian authorities initially declined requests for the flight to land before it was cleared to land in Tabuk. Despite Saudi Arabia not maintaining formal diplomatic ties with Israel, security and intelligence coordination reportedly took place behind the scenes during the incident.
Passengers recounted scenes of terror during the incident, with some describing screams and panic as the plane plunged. Notably, an Israeli passenger with no prior flying experience helped pull the controls to stabilize the aircraft, citing knowledge from watching crash investigation documentaries.
Flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel pending a full investigation. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities expect to repatriate those stranded in the UAE. International leaders, including US President Donald Trump, have praised the efforts of the captain and passengers in averting a potential disaster, while discussions about the incident’s nature and causes continue.
