Oman is positioning itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development while addressing the significant energy demands such expansion entails. The country is advancing plans for the Oman Digital Triangle, a network of three interconnected hubs designed to support gigawatt-scale AI data centers, marking a substantial step in its digital and energy future.

The move highlights the growing challenge of balancing the rising power requirements of AI technologies with Oman’s existing electricity infrastructure. Industry comparisons illustrate the scale of this growth: a single turbine at the Dhofar Wind Farm generates 3.8 million watts at full capacity, and the combined Manah I and II solar projects produce approximately 1 billion watts. By contrast, projections indicate that Oman's transmission networks will reach a peak load of about 9 billion watts (9 gigawatts) by 2025, a figure comparable to the power demands of large AI data centers proposed abroad, such as a recently reported 10-billion-watt data center project planned in southern Ohio.

Over the past two decades, Oman has expanded its electricity transmission network to more than 10,000 kilometers and achieved a reliability rate of 99.9999 percent, enabling a 225 percent increase in peak load capacity. This developmental success has made power interruptions rare, supporting economic growth and daily life without demand-related disruptions.

However, the energy consumption associated with AI and cloud computing introduces a new dynamic. These technologies require vast electrical power, cooling systems, and other infrastructure, often straining resource availability, especially water in arid regions like Oman. The country’s strategy emphasizes sustainable development, advocating that AI facilities should pay for the generation and transmission capacities they require, employ cooling technologies appropriate for water-scarce environments, and align their electricity use with credible renewable sources on an hourly basis.

In addition to physical infrastructure, Oman is seeking to maximize the broader benefits of AI investment. Membership in the recently formed World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, alongside 28 other countries, demonstrates its commitment to shaping AI governance and cooperation. For Oman, the key measure of success will be the extent to which AI projects translate into local capabilities: developing expertise, fostering research partnerships, supporting Omani universities and startups, and ensuring long-term national value beyond energy consumption alone.

As Oman embraces this new phase of digital transformation, the challenge will be to ensure that the growth in AI infrastructure complements the country’s renewable energy goals and contributes meaningfully to its economic and technological landscape. The investments under the Oman Digital Triangle initiative highlight the country’s ambition to convert its reliable electricity supply and renewable potential into a sustainable foundation for AI-driven development.
