More than 1,500 runners took part in Oman’s inaugural Muscat Mallathon on October 2, transforming the Sultanate’s largest shopping center into an unconventional race venue. Organized by SABCO Sports and presented by Muscat Marathon as part of Oman’s Physical Activity Month, the event marked the country’s largest mall run to date, attracting a diverse group of participants including seasoned athletes, families, children, and first-time runners.
The event began early with mall gates opening at 5:45 a.m., followed by a warm-up session led by UFC Gym. The main race, sponsored by Samsung, covered a 4.2-kilometer course that combined indoor and outdoor sections, challenging participants with a unique route through the air-conditioned corridors of the Mall of Oman. The race started at 6:30 a.m. in waves to accommodate the large number of runners.
Following the competitive portion, a Poppins 1.2-kilometer Fun Run was held at 8 a.m. to engage a broader segment of the community, especially families, children, and seniors. This shorter, indoor route was intended to provide an accessible introduction to running without the pressures associated with longer races. Organizers emphasized the importance of encouraging physical activity across all age groups by promoting a message that every journey begins with a single step.
For many young participants, the event was about more than just finishing the course. It offered an opportunity to replace screen time with physical activity, with the aim of fostering healthier lifestyle habits from an early age. Athletes and coaches praised the inclusive nature of the event. Ayoub Chikhaoui, a coach and athlete, applauded all participants for their effort and enthusiasm, highlighting the collective spirit that defined the morning.
The event’s unusual setting also drew particular attention. Experienced runner Fatma al Kindi remarked on the special nature of competing inside a mall, where the cool, controlled environment offered a stark contrast to the typical outdoor races held in Oman’s morning heat. The empty shops and expansive indoor spaces created a surreal atmosphere, adding a new dimension to the running experience.
SABCO Sports commercial strategist Youssef Sultan described the Mallathon as the realization of a long-held ambition, expressing satisfaction with the event’s success. Prize money was awarded to the top five men and women in the 4.2-kilometer race, alongside official shirts, timed bibs, and finisher medals that contributed to the event’s festive atmosphere.
Looking ahead, Sultan indicated plans to make the Mallathon an annual fixture, saying, “Insha Allah next year.” The race also fits into a broader calendar of upcoming events, with the Muscat Heritage Run set for November 6, the Jebel Sifah Race on December 18, and the much-anticipated Muscat Marathon scheduled for January 29 and 30, 2027. The inaugural Mallathon appears to be a promising step in expanding Oman’s running culture, welcoming new participants, and creating innovative spaces for physical activity.
