In a quiet corner of Quincy, a new restaurant offering homemade Filipino and Jamaican cuisine has quietly gained a loyal following. Bright Light, operated by husband-and-wife team Uton and Rose Martin, has been serving a mix of dishes from their native Jamaica and the Philippines since opening during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of their establishment at 143 Water Street.

The Martins’ journey to restaurant ownership is rooted in their multicultural backgrounds and shared passion for cooking. Uton Martin, originally from Jamaica, previously worked various jobs including bartender positions and HVAC installation. Rose Martin, from the Philippines, was a phlebotomist before teaming up with her husband to launch Bright Light amid pandemic challenges. Their decision to open a restaurant during uncertain times was motivated by optimism, reflected in the restaurant’s name symbolizing hope in difficult circumstances.

Bright Light is located on a quiet block on Hancock Street, an area known more for its pho and dim sum offerings than Caribbean or Filipino fare. Despite its unassuming exterior, the restaurant’s interior features sunflower yellow walls and a welcoming atmosphere where customers often exchange greetings with the owners behind the counter.

The menu features hearty dishes such as oxtail stew, curry goat, and jerk chicken paired with traditional sides like plantains and Jamaican red beans. The Martins note similarities between the two cuisines, citing dishes such as Filipino pork adobo and Jamaican stew chicken, which both rely on rich marinades and fragrant spices. Filipino specialties include sisig—prepared with crispy pork or tofu combined with onions and peppers—and pancit bihon, a stir-fried rice noodle dish with vegetables. Jamaican offerings include beef patties with flaky pastry and aromatic minced beef fillings.

Bright Light also serves signature Filipino desserts like halo-halo, a layered treat featuring ube ice cream, jelly, and milk over crushed ice. The casual restaurant does not prioritize speed, with food served as it is prepared, but portions are generous and priced around $20 per dish. Among beverage options, a spicy ginger lemonade presented in large jugs is a popular choice.

The Martins have cultivated a vibrant and personal dining experience that offers a distinctive blend of Filipino and Jamaican flavors within Quincy’s diverse culinary landscape. Their commitment to quality and cultural authenticity has established Bright Light as a cherished local spot for those seeking comforting, home-cooked meals.
