A child has died and two other children, along with a woman, remain in critical condition following a stabbing incident in the Blue Mountains area of New South Wales. The attack occurred on Waratah Road in Valley Heights on Sunday, according to police.

New South Wales Police reported that emergency responders were called to the scene after several members of the public found a woman and three children with stab wounds inside a vehicle. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The two surviving children, believed to be under five years old, and the woman, who is thought to be in her 40s, were treated by NSW Ambulance personnel before being transported to hospital for surgery.

Superintendent John Nelson, speaking at a press conference Sunday evening, confirmed that the woman and the two children were still undergoing surgical procedures. While he did not verify the exact relationship between the woman and the children, he said she was not known to police. Authorities have made contact with the children’s father but have not engaged with other family members at this time.

Police said a crime scene has been established, and no further suspects are currently being sought. The investigation remains in its early stages as authorities continue to gather information. Officers responding to the event received support following what Superintendent Nelson described as “a tragic circumstance.”
