Approximately one in five adults in the United Kingdom have declined wedding invitations due to the associated expenses, according to a recent survey. The average cost of attending a wedding event was reported to be £316 per person, with around 12.5% of respondents stating that their individual spending exceeded £500.
The survey, commissioned by Tesco Bank, revealed that nearly one-third (31%) of participants have turned down wedding invitations solely because of financial concerns. This trend highlights the growing economic pressure faced by many when deciding whether to attend social events that involve travel, attire, and gift expenses.
Adrian Kucharski, 38, who works for a housing association, shared his experience declining an invitation recently. He cited both the costs involved and the expectation to purchase a gift as factors influencing his decision to say no.
The findings suggest that the rising costs of weddings and the broader financial commitments required of guests may be impacting traditional social customs. This could have broader implications for event planning and the dynamics of social gatherings in the UK as personal budgets become increasingly constrained.
