A gas leak explosion at the National Nephrology Hospital in Polonnaruwa on Saturday morning resulted in the death of one hospital worker and injuries to six others. The blast occurred around 4 a.m. in the hospital's kitchen area, causing significant damage to the premises.

Seven people, including three kitchen staff, one patient, a patient caretaker, and a security guard, were affected by the explosion. All were transported to Polonnaruwa General Hospital for treatment. While three of the injured were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, a 36-year-old healthcare assistant succumbed to injuries the following afternoon.

Authorities suspect that a gas leak triggered the explosion, and investigations are ongoing. Police and the Government Analyst’s Department are working to determine the exact cause.

Due to the damage sustained, several patients receiving treatment in the affected section of the National Nephrology Hospital were transferred to Polonnaruwa General Hospital for continued care.

Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa visited both the National Nephrology Hospital and Polonnaruwa General Hospital on Saturday afternoon. During his visit, he inspected the damage caused by the explosion and met with the injured patients. He reaffirmed that while a gas leak is believed to be the likely cause, official investigation results are awaited to confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident.
