A police officer was critically wounded in a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, on Sunday evening during Yom Kippur services, authorities reported. The incident occurred as the synagogue was holding its evening prayers, but no congregants were harmed.

The suspected shooter was identified as 29-year-old Sean Ward from Quinte West, a nearby city. According to Belleville Police Deputy Chief Sherry Meeks, Ward was armed with a shotgun when he approached the synagogue. An off-duty officer, hired to provide security for the Yom Kippur services and stationed in an unmarked vehicle near the synagogue, confronted the suspect. Shots were exchanged, and the officer shot Ward, who sustained life-threatening injuries. The officer was also critically wounded but is expected to recover.

Synagogue President Norm Weddum described the officer’s actions as lifesaving, noting that the building was struck by multiple bullets during the attack. Weddum recounted hearing gunshots as he was welcoming attendees shortly before the shooting began.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched a probe into the incident. SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said on Monday that a team of investigators is working at the scene to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review available footage.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine the motive behind the attack and to piece together the full sequence of events. No further injuries have been reported.
