American actor Nicolas Cage has expressed acceptance of Amazon Prime Video’s decision to cancel the live-action series Spider-Noir after its inaugural season. The streaming platform announced on September 4 that it would not renew the show for a second season.
Spider-Noir, which premiered on MGM+ on May 25 and became available on Prime Video on May 27, marked Cage’s first leading role in a television series. He portrayed Ben Reilly, an older, grittier version of the superhero Spider-Man set in the 1930s. The series is based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir, who works as a private investigator in an alternate historical New York. The show was distinctive for being available in both black-and-white and color versions.
Despite the cancellation, Spider-Noir garnered critical acclaim, achieving a 92 percent critics’ score and a 90 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The eight-episode drama received 111 nominations at the recent Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, winning five, including Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) and Outstanding Title Design.
In a statement to a notable entertainment news outlet, Cage, 62, said, “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards.”
The series featured a supporting cast that included Lamorne Morris as newspaper editor Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as singer Cat Hardy, and Brendan Gleeson portraying mob boss Silvermane. The show was developed by showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot. Producers included Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmaking duo behind the acclaimed Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018) animated film and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023).
Cage had previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The character’s popularity in the film helped pave the way for his transition to the live-action series. A third and final installment in the animated Spider-Verse film series, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, is slated for release in June 2027.
