JOHOR BARU: Ong Chee Siang, a member of MCA Youth and chairman of its national education consultative committee, has been appointed as the special officer for Chinese affairs to the Johor Mentri Besar. The appointment was announced last Wednesday, as Ong assumes the role to enhance communication between the Chinese community and the state government.

In his new position, Ong will extend his outreach beyond his previous focus on the Tangkak area to engage with Chinese communities and non-governmental organizations across the entire state of Johor. He emphasized the importance of understanding the concerns and aspirations of the Chinese community in supporting the state’s development.

Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has directed Ong to strengthen ties with the Chinese community and ensure better communication of the government’s plans and initiatives. Ong highlighted that his responsibilities would go beyond addressing complaints, encompassing the dissemination of information related to state programs such as Bantuan Kasih Johor, aimed at providing financial assistance to eligible individuals.

Furthermore, Ong stressed the significance of informing the community about the Johor Economic Transformation Plan, particularly developments planned outside southern Johor. He noted that his background in banking and finance has equipped him with the skills necessary for engaging with diverse stakeholders and understanding financial matters related to community development.

Ong takes over from Chua Jian Boon, who previously held this special officer role before winning the Layang-Layang state seat in the recent July state election. Chua has since been appointed as deputy chairman of the state unity, heritage and culture committee. Ong acknowledged support from Chua in transitioning into the new position.

Community members and NGOs with concerns or feedback related to Chinese affairs in Johor have been invited to contact Ong directly at 017-233 6878. The appointment reflects the Johor state government's ongoing effort to foster closer collaboration and communication with its Chinese population as part of its broader development agenda.
