New footage has surfaced of Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, the 18-year-old accused of driving a BMW into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans earlier this month, providing insight into the teenager’s activities before the incident. The videos, found on the live-streaming platform Twitch, show Samarasinghe rapping, playing pranks, and live-streaming video games approximately six months before the crash.
The collision occurred on October 3 at around 8:30 a.m. near the Transfield Drive roundabout on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend, just before the NRL grand final. Police allege that Samarasinghe drove his vehicle into a group of supporters, resulting in injuries to ten people, including three children, some of whom sustained serious harm.
The newly released eight Twitch clips, uploaded by both Samarasinghe and other users, depict the teen engaging with friends in a casual setting. In one video, he is shown nodding his head to the rap song "Fast Life" by zaydesuu alongside a friend. Another clip captures a prank where Samarasinghe pours water over a companion’s head, then points to the camera indicating the moment was being recorded live. Additional footage includes a rap performance featuring the lyrics, “I’m looking like Ronnie, but that’s really funny. Say I won’t cut it, I’m making this money ... my name is Indika, see what’s up?” Several clips also display Samarasinghe streaming video games while interacting with online acquaintances.
Samarasinghe was released on bail on Friday and returned to his family home in Randwick, valued at approximately $4 million. He appeared tearful and was wearing a white neck brace, accompanied by his mother upon departure from Silverwater Remand Centre. During the bail hearing, Judge Khan acknowledged that Samarasinghe has no prior criminal record. Samarasinghe now faces multiple charges related to the incident as ongoing investigations continue.
