Long-lost scripts from the British television series *Only Fools and Horses* sold for £4,900 at auction, featuring previously unseen jokes and scenes that were excluded from the original broadcast of the 1996 Christmas special. Among the notable content was a deleted joke made by the character Del Boy just before he sells a watch for £6.2 million in the episode.
In the removed scene, Del Boy remarks to his brother Rodney, “They’ve cleaned it with a bit of Brasso,” a line that was cut before airing. Auctioneer Andy Stowe commented on the significance of the joke, describing it as “the final joke made by Del before he becomes a millionaire,” and as capturing the essence of the show’s humor. He also noted the irony of a prestigious auction house like Sotheby’s featuring a line referencing a common household metal polish.
The scripts were sold by Auctioneum Ltd, a Bristol-based auction house, on behalf of a member of the production crew associated with the series. The auction offered a rare glimpse into the creative process behind one of the UK’s most popular sitcoms, showcasing material that had never been made available to the public until now.
