Scripts for the British television series Only Fools and Horses were frequently longer than the final broadcast allowed, requiring scenes to be cut to fit the episodes' time constraints. Recently, archive producer Richard Latto has uncovered a collection of these unused scenes, offering fans and cast members a rare glimpse into previously unseen material.
The discovery includes surplus footage from various episodes, notably from the 1989 Christmas special, The Jolly Boys’ Outing, which was watched by over 20 million viewers at the time of its original airing. Among the restored content is the introduction of a previously unknown character—Kenny, who is identified as Marlene’s brother—adding new depth to the series’ backstory.
Some of the recovered clips are more extensive than typically expected for deleted scenes, revealing additional character development and moments of humor. David Jason, who portrayed the lead character Del Boy, commented on the archival footage, expressing regret that some of the scenes, such as one featuring Uncle Albert recounting a war story, had been cut.
The two-part special, which will feature members of the cast sharing their reactions to the rediscovered material, also includes contributions from Tessa Peake-Jones (Raquel), Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra), and Sue Holderness (Marlene). The archival release offers a nostalgic opportunity for longtime followers of Only Fools and Horses to engage with fresh content that complements the original episodes.
