Fear is an emotional response arising from the anticipation of harm or loss, encompassing both worldly and spiritual contexts. It represents a disruption of inner peace and security, manifesting when an individual expects to suffer an adverse event or fears losing something valued.

According to Imam Ibn Qudamah, fear is akin to the anguish felt by a wrongdoer anticipating punishment; its intensity correlates with the certainty and severity of the expected outcome. He emphasizes that recognizing the omnipotence of Allah leads to a profound form of fear known as "Khashyah," which is distinct from ordinary fear. This specific fear, experienced mainly by knowledgeable and devout believers, grows in proportion to one’s understanding of divine power and justice.

The Quran addresses varying dimensions of fear across different contexts. These include fear of death or defeat during conflict, fear arising from uncertainty or potential errors in legal or social dealings, and fear driven by the prospect of punishment or divine retribution. For example, one verse references the anxiety associated with security threats and public disorder, while another portrays the physical and emotional state of individuals overwhelmed by fear in times of war.

The concept of fear as a motivator for moral accountability is also highlighted. Ibn Qudamah describes fear as a controlling force employed by Allah to inspire believers to maintain righteousness and avoid transgression. It serves as a beacon guiding individuals to differentiate between right and wrong, encouraging retreat from harmful actions and fostering spiritual vigilance.

While fear may produce discomfort and disrupt worldly desires, it also functions as a corrective mechanism that awakens individuals from heedlessness and realigns them with ethical and spiritual principles. The presence of fear in the heart is not an end in itself but a means to improve one’s condition and relationship with the divine. In this framework, escaping from divine accountability is impossible, as true security is found only in submitting to Allah’s will rather than fleeing from it.
