Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo faces multiple citations following his arrest on July 23 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. According to law enforcement documents released this week, Romo was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired and several related offenses.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office issued three citations against Romo shortly after the stop. One citation alleges the presence of an open container of alcohol found inside his black Jeep during an inventory conducted as the vehicle was being towed. This citation carries a fine of $267 for possession of an open intoxicant in a motor vehicle.

Another citation pertains to an alleged unsafe maneuver, with police reporting Romo drove in the marked right emergency lane during rush hour traffic to pass slower vehicles and then cut across a marked gore—a triangular area separating lanes—to reach his destination. According to the arresting officer’s report, Romo appeared unfamiliar with the term “gore.” This citation carries a $235 fine.

Romo was also cited for operating while under the influence (OWI), an offense associated with a fine of $1,066. In addition, court records indicate he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test after being arrested, which led to a separate citation.

Body camera footage made public shows Romo telling officers that he had been coming from a golf course and was on his way to visit his grandparents when he was stopped. Officers noted signs they said suggested impairment, including red, glassy eyes and the smell of alcohol. At the police station, Romo underwent several field sobriety tests, performing poorly on those administered, according to law enforcement reports. When asked to take a breath test, Romo reportedly declined, citing legal advice he had received.

The 2014 NFL All-Pro player and current CBS NFL analyst has not made any public statements regarding the incident. A court date has been set for September 21. The case remains pending, and additional details may emerge as proceedings continue.
