A coalition of California mayors, county supervisors, business owners, and community leaders has issued an open letter urging gubernatorial candidates to prioritize energy affordability amid rapidly rising utility costs across the state. The group highlights the significant economic strain that escalating residential electricity rates and high fuel prices are placing on families and small businesses throughout California.

According to the letter, residential electricity rates in California have increased by 68% over the past six years, nearly double the rate of increases seen in other states. Fuel prices are also among the highest in the nation. The signees argue that these energy costs have broad economic repercussions, contributing to rising grocery bills, increased housing costs, and surging healthcare expenses.

The coalition emphasizes the urgency of addressing these challenges in the upcoming four years, calling on the next Governor to balance energy affordability with ongoing climate objectives. While recognizing that California must continue pursuing environmental goals, signatories warn that the state remains heavily dependent on oil and gas for the majority of its energy consumption.

Notably, in-state oil production has declined by 40% over the past six years, leading California to spend approximately $25 billion annually on imported oil. The letter also points out the sharp reduction in the state’s refining capacity, with only seven refineries currently operating compared to dozens in previous decades. The coalition cautions that continued shutdowns of existing energy infrastructure without reliable replacements could exacerbate price pressures and economic instability.

The group’s recommendations urge a pragmatic “all-of-the-above” strategy that incorporates renewable energy sources alongside nuclear, hydroelectric power, and traditional fuels to ensure a stable, affordable energy supply. They also call for maintaining and modernizing current energy infrastructure until alternative sources are proven reliable and sufficient.

The letter stresses that the concerns transcend partisan politics, framing energy affordability as a practical issue affecting everyday Californians. The coalition contends that California’s energy policy should focus on keeping the lights on, safeguarding working- and middle-class families, and supporting economic growth.

The statement concludes with a call for leadership that reflects the state’s history of innovation and progress, urging candidates to adopt policies that prioritize energy affordability alongside environmental sustainability. The letter was released by Californians for Energy Independence, with Steven Lucas serving as treasurer.
