OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has developed a solution to the nearly century-old Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems in mathematics. The company, known for its ChatGPT AI chatbot, reported that it deployed a system of approximately 10,000 coordinating AI agents working concurrently over 88 hours to tackle the complex equations that describe fluid dynamics.

According to OpenAI, the agents were organized into groups that communicated internally and were equipped with various tools, including access to a cached version of the internet and the ability to run code. This multi-agent approach was instrumental in producing what OpenAI described as a resolution to the problem by September 5.

The Navier-Stokes problem, posed over 90 years ago, concerns the behavior of fluid flow and remains a significant challenge in mathematical physics. It is one of the Millennium Prize Problems established by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000, each with a $1 million reward for a valid solution. The institute created these problems to highlight some of the most difficult and foundational questions in mathematics, aiming to spur progress and public awareness.

OpenAI’s announcement has been met with skepticism from members of the mathematical community. Tristan Buckmaster, a professor of mathematics at New York University, expressed doubts about the claimed solution. While Buckmaster has collaborated with OpenAI to refine the company's mathematical models, he indicated on his website that the Navier-Stokes problem remains unresolved. The Clay Mathematics Institute has yet to issue any formal statement or verification regarding OpenAI’s claim.

The potential resolution of the Navier-Stokes problem holds wide-ranging implications for theoretical physics, engineering, and applied mathematics, where understanding fluid motion is critical. However, the rigorous peer review process typically required to confirm such a breakthrough has not yet been completed.

Other outstanding Millennium Prize Problems that continue to challenge researchers include the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture, related to properties of elliptic curves, and the Riemann Hypothesis, which addresses the distribution of prime numbers. These problems remain central to contemporary mathematical research and have attracted sustained efforts from experts worldwide.
