Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old former engineer at OpenAI, was arrested by the FBI on October 9 in connection with the planting of a covert listening device at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Federal prosecutors allege that Alfozan installed the hidden audio recorder behind a television in an executive conference room around September 28.
The recording device was reportedly disguised within a roll of toilet paper and connected to a USB port, according to the Justice Department. OpenAI employees discovered the bug approximately two days later, on September 30, prompting an internal investigation that involved the company’s own artificial intelligence tools to identify the individual responsible.
Alfozan, a Saudi national who joined OpenAI in July 2025, was captured on surveillance footage during the incident, visibly startled as he inspected the area behind the television. The image of him with wide eyes and an open mouth quickly circulated on social media, where it was widely shared and became the subject of numerous memes.
While the online reaction focused on the engineer’s surprised expression, legal authorities are proceeding with the case amid concerns over industrial espionage and corporate security. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the motives behind the device’s placement or the status of any ongoing investigations linked to the incident.
The arrest highlights the increasing challenges tech companies face in safeguarding sensitive information in competitive industries, especially as artificial intelligence and related technologies continue to attract significant corporate and governmental interest. Alfozan remains in federal custody as officials further examine the facts surrounding the case.
