New dining options and food experiences have recently opened or are set to debut in New York City, offering a range of culinary styles and atmospheres across several neighborhoods.
In Midtown East, the former site of Neary’s Irish pub, which closed after 57 years, has been transformed into the Derby Club. Restaurateurs Chris Coco and Craig Hutson, alongside chef Ed Cotton, have revitalized the space while preserving some vintage charm. The venue features a polished wood bar, an intimate dining area with red banquettes, and a chandelier sourced from the original Waldorf Astoria. Currently operating in a soft opening with limited two-top seatings, the Derby Club plans a full opening on August 19. Its menu pays homage to classic dishes such as steak Diane, chicken potpie, clams casino, and rack of lamb served with Neary’s signature mint jelly. The establishment is located at 358 East 57th Street.
In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the former Isla restaurant at the William Vale hotel has reopened as Liba, a concept inspired by Tel Aviv's culinary traditions. Led by Israeli-born chef Maayan Glass, who serves as the culinary director, Liba emphasizes a “new kosher” approach, adhering to strict kosher guidelines and closing on Fridays and Saturdays. The indoor-outdoor venue centers around a brick oven used for baking bread and cooking various main dishes. The menu includes starters such as pickled vegetables and brik—a tuna tartlet differing from the traditional Tunisian turnover—followed by rib-eye steaks, sticky date-glazed lamb ribs paired with cucumber salad, and a dessert of s’mores chocolate mousse. Liba can be found at 107 North 12th Street near Wythe Avenue.
Chef Greg Baxtrom has introduced Camp 5 Acres as a summer-themed extension of his 5 Acres restaurant, located at Rockefeller Center. Positioned on the esplanade level at 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza, Camp 5 Acres features an outdoor setup with picnic tables, high-top seating, and an Airstream kitchen trailer. The menu channels nostalgic summer fare with items like burgers, lobster rolls, Wagyu corn dogs, tater tots, as well as sundaes and soft-serve ice cream sandwiches. The beverage selection includes innovative offerings such as frozen espresso martini slushies. Reservations and further details are available through 5 Acres’ website.
In Williamsburg’s North Ninth Street area, Matchaful Ritual Bar has opened within the flagship Matchaful teahouse. This intimate eight-seat bar offers guided matcha tastings and instructional sessions, alongside specialty matcha drinks such as a $30 crown melon matcha made with Japan’s prized fruit. The setting includes a patio and garden space, providing a serene environment for tea enthusiasts. Matchaful Ritual Bar is located at 92 Berry Street.
These new venues highlight a diverse spectrum of culinary concepts, from refined classic American and Irish fare to kosher Israeli cuisine and curated tea experiences, reflecting the evolving New York City dining landscape.
