Hamas has announced its willingness to relinquish governance of the Gaza Strip, a move seen as an effort to shift responsibility for advancing the peace process onto the United States and Israel. The Palestinian group, which has administered Gaza for nearly 20 years, disclosed on Monday its readiness to transfer control to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a technocratic entity established under the framework of Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative.

Since a ceasefire took effect in October 2025, the situation in Gaza has remained volatile. Reports indicate that during the truce, over 1,000 Palestinians, including children, have been killed in Israeli operations. The violence traces back to a Hamas operation on October 7, 2023, after which Israel launched extensive military actions in Gaza. According to some figures, these actions have resulted in more than 73,000 deaths and caused displacement of nearly two million people, leaving many without access to adequate shelter, food, or healthcare.

Israel has dismissed Hamas’s decision as a “trick,” expressing skepticism over the group’s intentions. Israeli officials have suggested that this development may serve as a pretext to resume military operations in Gaza, citing Hamas’s refusal to disarm as justification. Observers point to a perceived asymmetry in the enforcement of agreements, noting that while the Palestinian side is expected to adhere fully to terms, Israel continues operations resulting in civilian casualties. Additionally, Israel is reported to control approximately 70 percent of Gaza’s territory, reinforcing its presence in the area.

The ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza have drawn widespread international concern. Critics argue that Israeli policies in the region amount to a form of occupation sustained with the backing of Western allies. They contend that meaningful disarmament by Hamas is unlikely without an end to Israel’s occupation. Israel, for its part, maintains its right to security and has indicated its intention to retain control over territories in Lebanon and Syria as well.

Calls for the international community to address the broader issues of occupation and sovereignty have intensified. Advocates emphasize the need for Israel to withdraw from occupied lands and criticized what they characterize as double standards applied in enforcing agreements between the parties. The situation in Gaza continues to pose a significant challenge to peace efforts, with humanitarian conditions and political tensions remaining deeply entrenched.
