A proposal to open a sex shop adjacent to a domestic abuse support center in Swansea city center has sparked local controversy. Eve Goodman, a 40-year-old mother of two, has submitted an application to establish the store, prompting concerns from neighbouring organizations.
The Domestic Abuse One Stop Shop, located next to the proposed site, has voiced opposition to the plan. Janine Evans, the center’s manager, expressed apprehension that the presence of a sex shop could deter survivors of domestic abuse from seeking assistance at the facility. Evans emphasized that the objection is not based on moral grounds but focuses on the potential impact on the center’s clients.
Goodman, who is awaiting a decision from Swansea City Council, described her proposed store as “a safe space for women to explore their sexuality.” She maintains that the shop will offer a supportive environment aimed at empowering women, suggesting that it could complement broader efforts around sexual health and wellbeing.
Local authorities are reviewing the application as they consider the competing interests involved. The council’s decision will weigh the concerns raised by the domestic abuse center against Goodman’s proposal and its intended purpose within the community.
At present, no final determination has been made regarding the opening of the sex shop, and both parties continue to engage with council officials as the process unfolds.
