Researchers have documented a new and striking hunting behavior among orcas off the coast of California, where the whales ram their prey with such force that it disintegrates into fragments. This method, captured on video in two separate instances, involves one orca immobilizing a sunfish while another propels its body nose-first into the prey, causing a burst of fish pieces.
The observations, detailed in a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology, highlight a behavior not previously recorded among orcas. Erick Higuera, a co-author of the paper, described the event as unique, noting that the orcas’ ability to break large vertebrae into thousands of fragments purely through kinetic impact is unprecedented.
The prey targeted in these predation events are sharp-tail sunfish, a slow-moving, bulbous species that can measure between three and six feet in length and weigh several hundred pounds. These fish frequent surface waters to rest and rid themselves of parasites. Their dense, gelatinous outer layer makes them difficult to penetrate, leading orcas to employ this ramming tactic to break down the fish into more manageable pieces.
The incidents, which took place in the Gulf of California near Mexico, align with previous research showing orcas feeding on sunfish and other unusual prey, including young great white sharks. Researchers propose that this ramming behavior may serve dual purposes: as a hunting strategy to access the sunfish’s rich fatty tissues or as a form of play, particularly in the presence of younger orcas. In the recorded sightings, juvenile whales were observed feeding on the sunfish fragments while adults handled the larger portions.
Higuera emphasized the role of adult females in using these events as a teaching opportunity for younger pod members, helping them develop complex motor skills and team coordination necessary for successful hunts. This aligns with broader observations of orca social behavior, which includes playful interactions and cooperative hunting techniques.
The study’s authors suggest that this extreme form of prey fragmentation might be a culturally transmitted hunting practice unique to the Gulf of California population. Similar predation methods have not been documented in other regions, indicating that orcas may adapt and pass down specific hunting techniques based on local ecological conditions. Nonetheless, researchers call for further study of orca feeding habits across different areas to better understand the breadth and variation of these behaviors.
This discovery adds to the growing body of knowledge about the intelligence and adaptability of orcas, underlining their complex social structures and innovative approaches to predation.
