A new book by Paul Kahn offers a comprehensive exploration of how humans have visualized and organized knowledge about the world over the past eight centuries. Titled "Mapping Knowledge Across Time," the work traces the evolution of information design through seven key historical texts dating from the 12th to the 20th century.
Kahn, a lecturer at Northeastern University specializing in the history of information design, frames his study around what he calls “an imaginary library” consisting of seven real books. These include the 1154 Tabula Rogeriana (The Book of Roger), the 1375 Catalan Atlas, the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle, the 1613 Tushu Bian, the 18th-century Atlas Historique, the 1852 Physikalischer Atlas, and the World Geo-Graphic Atlas, published in either 1935 or 1953 depending on the edition referenced. Each volume was selected for its shared purpose: a cultural effort to visualize the entirety of the world.
Rather than focusing on each book individually, Kahn organizes his analysis thematically, examining recurring visual patterns such as the use of circles and timelines across different centuries. For example, he notes parallels between timelines in Herbert Bayer’s 20th-century World Geo-Graphic Atlas and the curved family tree graphics of the Nuremberg Chronicle, a commercially successful illustrated encyclopedia from around 500 years earlier.
The book covers a range of topics from biblical narratives and trade routes to classifications of humanity, illustrating how visual representations have reflected contemporary cultural and economic realities. A notable chapter looks at time representation, detailing how various works address the challenge of depicting past, present, and future on static pages. One example is a Nuremberg Chronicle illustration of Noah’s Ark that combines multiple stages of a single narrative into one image. Another is a graphic in the Physikalischer Atlas, adapted from an 1836 original by geologist William Buckland, which shows geological evolution without assigning specific dates—an approach that sidesteps conflict with Bishop Ussher’s 17th-century biblical chronology.
While the book is rich with intricate historical graphics that readers may wish to zoom in on, it is presented in print with magnified panels to showcase detail. Kahn also broadens the scope by including influential works outside of his core seven, such as 19th-century trade visualizations by French engineer Charles Joseph Minard, who inspired more modern graphic efforts.
In reflecting on the future of information visualization, Kahn speculates about an eighth entry in his imaginary library, projecting that digital and immersive formats like virtual reality could transform how knowledge is presented. He imagines animated, dynamic books with unfolding pages and interactive elements, comparing such ideas to the aesthetics of now-defunct technologies like Adobe Flash as well as emerging devices like Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
Kahn cautions that while new technology often appears as “The Future,” many innovations fade because they fail to endure practical or aesthetic tests—what he calls the “coffee-table test.” His own book, by contrast, is designed for repeated, tactile engagement and reflection, inviting readers to revisit its layered insights over time.
